“Strength is not nearly as important as desire. I don’t think you can teach anyone desire. I think it’s a gift. I don’t know why I have it, but I do.” — Larry Bird

“Every time you back is against the wall, there is only one person that can help. And that’s you. It has to come from inside.” Pat Riley

“To see a man beaten not by a better opponent but by himself is a tragedy.” Cus D’Amato

Sometimes in life I feel like there is a mysterious deja vu of sorts. I often think that life is synchronized in weird ways. I was reading through some of the old material I kept from my high school playing days and came across this paper. It contains the three quotes above.

What you are reading are quotes. These are not meaningless words. They are the exact words needed at the exact moment in a season for the team I am coaching. It is almost as if the handout was meant more for this moment than the actually intention of when I was playing.

There comes a point in our lives when we must realize that we have to take ownership. We cannot control the size of our bodies. We cannot control how high we can jump or how fast we can run.

We can control our minds. Are we going to do the small details to our best capabilities? I firmly believe and live by the notion that the small details are everything.

Do we read for insights? Do we do the menial tasks of life and practice with full intention? Do we do the little things in life that are not fun to the best of our ability? Or do we go through the motions? Do we dismiss this as not being important? Do we think they are stupid and dumb? A waste of our time?

It is mindset. To dismiss the small things is to understand why you fall short in your goals. To dismiss the small things os to lose a game by a few points. To dismiss the small things is to realize why you are not improving.

Everything matters.

Everything

Every little thing you do.

Every little thought in your head.

It matters.

At least if you want to be a winner in life.
